The village

In Turkish, the word Yeni means new, so this village is New Erenkoy. Once the centre of the thriving and lucrative tobacco industry but after partition the tobacco conglomerates left the island and the industry was finished. However still very evident are the factories, packing houses and smokeries once associated with the business. Starting during the Middle Ages with most tobacco being produced in the Larnaca area, in the 20th century production moved to the Karpaz and The Tobacco Cooperative Society built the vast warehouse close to the village. Within the last decade the industry has undergone a revival and tobacco can once again be seen growing in the Karpaz landscape. With its narrow winding streets dotted with coffee shops and markets Yenierenkoy is a pleasant rambling village, Yeni Bogazici has a range of shops including several supermarkets, a chemist and internet café, the small tourist office is open in the summer months there is also a market every week In stark contrast a few kilometers along the coast is the recently opened brand new state of the art Karpaz Gate Marina with berthing for 350 yachts and all the facilities that the yachting fraternity require. When completed the development will include shops, apartments and a hotel and casino.

The Karpaz Peninsula

There are still areas of Cyprus that have remained virtually unchanged for hundreds of years, and the Karpaz Peninsula is one of them. Only the passage of time has left tell-tale marks upon the terrain and the shoreline. For thousands of years this island has been inhabited, and hidden amongst the densely packed undergrowth that covers the hillsides are the remains of past civilisations. Take a journey into the Karpaz Peninsula to discover for yourself areas that still have the essence of ancient Cyprus. Where you will see the famous Karpaz donkeys roaming freely and shepherds grazing their flocks of sheep and goats amidst the stunning countryside. A vast array of Beaches of golden sand can be found on the north and south coasts. Some are easy to find as they may have a small hotel nearby but others have to be searched for. There are few signposts to the sea and part of the adventure is seeking out the smaller, deserted bays where the crystal water gently laps the shore, and the only company you will find will be a the occasional sea bird.
