Outside
A low surrounding fence runs through the length of this property with its low maintenance garden, orange, pomegranate, lemon, olive, and palm trees along with a grape vine. The garden is also large enough to accommodate a pool if required and a shed sits by the corner fitted with shelf space for tools and a tumble dryer. A wheelchair ramp from the back garden into the house makes for easy mobility if necessary. Stunning mountain and countryside views are in abundance and a general feeling of ease surrounds you.
The Area
Büyükkonuk or as it is fondly referred to as: the gateway to the Karpaz peninsula
is the pilot village in eco-friendly tourism in Northern Cyprus with a population
of just over. Located on the foothills of the Besparmak Mountain Range at the start
of the narrow panhandle of Cyprus, this indigenous eco-village can boast equal proximity
to both coastal shores and a rich bio-diversity of both plants and wildlife.
A rich selection of crops include olive, carob, wheat, barley and some vegetable farming in watered fields. Dairy cows, sheep and goats are raised and most households maintain chickens and a household garden. Forested hills border the village, filling the air with scented pine and wild herbs. Olive groves and other trees dot the landscape with different shades of green, while orchids and other wildflowers abound in season.
You can help pick carobs, or pick your own olives, get them pressed at the local olive mill and take home your own oil. The carob season usually starts on the 3rd weekend in August, and is quite short (and hot!). Olive picking normally starts on the 3rd weekend in September, and can continue into December or longer if the season is particularly good. If you want to press your own olives, the mill normally opens shortly after the start of the picking season to allow the first of the olives to be collected.
Plenty of field tracks and the absence of fences make walking and cycling sports attractive in this picturesque village and the famous B&B: Delcraft, which originally started in 2000 as a craft shop for locally made handicrafts, has expanded to an activity centre, which is a meeting place and a start for Eco-living with devised village activities and use of the local traditions of food and crafts to encourage sustainable development.
The European Union, through the offices of UNDP-PFF, have assisted in the enlargement and refurbishment of Delcraft’s facilities. Now there are 10 beds available in the B&B in 4 different self-contained, air conditioned rooms, some with disabled access.
At the borders of the village, there are the churches of Saint George, Saint Afksentios and Saint Loukas. There are also the ancient churches of Panagia Kira, Saint George Parouzos, Saint Vasilios (in ruins), Saint Photiou (in ruins) and Saint Katherine (in ruins).
