Famagusta is one of the finest examples of mediaeval architecture in the eastern Mediterranean. The oldest traces of settlements lie in an area near the modern town of Famagusta, then named "Enkomi", going back to 13th Century B.C., the Bronze Age. At the start of the Iron Age the town was built near the sea and was known by the name "Salamis". The name "Ammochostos" is first recorded during the Byzantine period. In 1571 Famagusta was conquered by the Ottoman's. A couple of miles east along the coast lies the Salamis ruins. Salamis was once the most important city in Cyprus, and the ruins are still very impressive today. Set on a site over one kilometre long, and with a sandy beach along the entire length of the site, Salamis is a great tourist attraction.

Travelling around Famagusta Bay along the scenic coastal route takes you past the town of Iskele and the popular fishing village of Bogaz to the five star resort at Bafra. From here you approach the glorious Karpaz Peninsula which is a protected area boasting some of the finest and most secluded beaches in the world.
