The Region
Formerly known as Famagusta, now locally known as Gazimagusa, The city lies to the east of the island close to the border between North Cyprus and South Cyprus. The region itself has some excellent sandy beaches along its long coast line. The ancient city is a fascinating place to visit with its numerous ancient ruins and architecture contained within the walled city. The whole area has been restored and pedestrianised and is almost an open air museum now. A walk through the ancient city takes you back in time and it really is a delight to wander around taking in the sights and enjoying the shops and restaurants that line the streets. The whole city takes on a different personality at night with creative lighting showing off the beautiful features of the ancient monuments. Travel further north and you come to the site of the ancient ruins of Salamis, there is also a long sandy beach here and it is a wonderful location for snorkeling.
