The Region
The region of Famagusta itself has some excellent sandy beaches along its long coast line. The ancient city is a fascinating place to visit with its numerous ancient ruins and architecture contained within the walled city. The whole area has been restored and pedestrianised and is almost an open air museum now. A walk through the ancient city takes you back in time and it really is a delight to wander around taking in the sights and enjoying the shops and restaurants that line the streets. The whole city takes on a different personality at night with creative lighting showing off the beautiful features of the ancient monuments. Travel further north and you come to the site of the ancient ruins of Salamis, there is also a long sandy beach here and it is a wonderful location for snorkeling. The famous long beach is an unspoiled stretch of sand used by the locals and hardly ever more than a handful of people there, some enjoying sail boarding and diving others just relaxing in the sun. Further on and you come to the lovely Bogaz Harbour and this is really the gateway to the stunning natural beauty of the Karpaz peninsular.
The Karpaz Peninsular is at the northern most tip of Cyprus, pointing out towards Syria and Turkey. The region has strict regulations on development and is a protected wildlife sanctuary where rare turtles lay their eggs on the golden sandy beaches, in excess of 300 species of birds pass through every year as they fly along one of the main migratory routes. Wild flowers are in abundance and the landscape is distinct from the rest of the island. It offers a haven of tranquillity for those who wish to explore the ancient monuments, walk or cycle on the mountain tracks or just relax on the beautiful beaches.
The Village
Bogaz Iskele is a truly beautiful village situated at the foot of the Karpaz Peninsula
you will still see the local fishermen ply their trade as they have for centuries
past from the fishing harbour that is the focal point for this delightful village.
Bogaz has a unique atmosphere that has bewitched countless tourists and many are
now happily living here alongside the friendly locals having decided that this is
the place to be. The harbour is ringed by many excellent restaurants and tavernas
from which to choose and where the catch of the day is a popular choice. Costs of
living in Bogaz are outstandingly affordable, with excellent fresh, reasonably priced
food and drinks, often at half the price you find at other and other Mediterranean
destinations. Many people simply fall in love with Bogaz whilst looking for their
new home in North Cyprus. The village is blessed with many natural attractions but
has managed to preserve its uniqueness and doesn’t suffocate its visitors with mass
tourism. Local Cypriots mingle in harmony with Europeans and other nationalities,
enjoying a cool drink, observing the activity around the working harbour and enjoying
life as it should be. Boat trips are available from here, either to try your luck
at fishing for your dinner or simply to relax and sunbathe as you float upon the
clear blue waters of the Mediterranean.
Bogaz is part of the urban district of Iskele
and the nearby small town of that name offers a good range of services including
shops, banks, medical facilities and so on. The major seaport and historic town of
Famagusta is a short drive along the coast road and the airport at Ercan is an easy
drive of about 30/45 minutes.
